Common dog injuries

I am collating a list of the most common orthopedic problems encountered by dogs and available treatment options for them. This post is a work in progress and will continually be updated.

1. Knee Injuries and knee ligament tears - Injuries to the knee is said to be common among dogs and what often happens is that they tear one of the criss-cross ligaments in their knees. This is similar to ACL injuries that are sustained by competitive athletes.

There are various surgical and non-surgical options available to fix this and the most popular procedure now seems to be tplo or tibial plateau levelling osteotomy, which is said to have a high success/recovery rate.

2. Hip Dysplaxia - caused by an abnormality in the hip socket, which can lead to lameness and severe joint arthritis. It is said to be a genetic trait that is triggered by environmental factors. This can occur in any dog breeds but are most common in large dogs.

3. Bicepital tenosynovitis - Although shoulder dislocation is rare, most large breed dogs may experience pain from inflammation of a shoulder tendon attached to the biceps. It is caused by overtaxing the shoulder or due to other conditions. The problem usually goes away with rest or anti-inflammatory drugs may be given to reduce pain and swelling.

4. Fractures - bone fractures can happen almost anywhere and to dogs of all sizes. The most common parts that are fractured are the dog's humerus, hind leg, and pelvis.

Almost all fractures require surgery to repair. Every owner should know how to give first aid to dog in case of fractures or risk (see this guide on the subject) aggravating the injury.

Do you have anything more to add? Feel free to write if you know of anymore dog injuries or if you just want to share your experience with your dog's orthopedic injury.

Thanksgiving 2011

Alright so I want to take a time out to write a journal entry about the things that I'm thankful for. It just amazes me how we can all go through life in a fast pace and take things for granted. Today is gratitude day and I'll be listing my top 10 ten things that I'm thankful for this holiday season.

  1. Job - Yeah I hate my job but thank god I have one in this economy.
  2. The "cooked" turkey in my table. Eventhough I'm slightly overweight, I'm thankful for all the food that I've stuffed my mouth with throughtout the year.
  3. Internet - it's my gateway to the world and #1 form of entertainment. But that can change soon if laws are passed that would restirct americans access to it.
  4. my dog sunny for being my best friend and sticking with me throught thick and thin
  5. our founding fathers - the US of A wouldn't be here today if they didn't take the risk to brave the new world
  6. My parents  - they would give me their basement and feed me everydat at a moment's notice.
  7. Coffee - gets me through the day.

Did I say ten? Well lets just leave it at that for now. What are the things that you're thankful for today? happy thanksgiving.

Me on the web - November 13 -20 2011

Things I've seen, heard, and experienced around the web

1. Bad Soy!
http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/avoid_soy.htm

An alarming article about soy from Dr. Mercola. He says that soy is not fit for human consumption. This did raise some red flags for me, but I get the feeling that his positions on stuff are way too extreme and he's getting tons of attention this way.

2. The article is hidden behind a pop-up but you know, you can simply disable javascript or css to get rid of it.

How? Use Quickjava for FF.

3. Police abuse on occpuy rallies

I don't agree with how the occpuiers do things (I think occupiers should really take the fight to Washington for allowing the "corporation" to be so powerful in the first place) but the police has taken things too far!

http://occupywallst.org/article/whom-do-you-serve/

Their like robocops, devoid of humanity and programmed to follow orders. At least Murphy a.k.a "the original Robocop" has a conscience and will.

Unicorns

I saw this from petsandwild, which was originall posted by fakescience over at tumblr.

And this got me thinking about some stuff about unicorns:

  1. Why do little girls love them? Is it because the horn and the horse is a phallic symbol?
  2. Why call it unicorn when it's more logical to call it UniHORN.
  3. Is it possible that the ancients were high on someting and thought they saw a horned-antelope or goat and thought it was a horse?

Whatever.

Pawnshops

Pawnstars is one of my most favorite shows on the tube. There's something about the show that's exciting: you never know what they're going to get and how much they can resell it for. Glad to hear that they don't deal with stolen goods. But I do think you can get more money by selling your unique items online. Just go to a pawnshop to have your item appraised.
